Our Micro-Credential Programs

Micro-credentials are like mini-certifications in relevant topic areas, learn more about Micro-Credentials. Our Micro-credentials focus on essentials for student success. We offer Micro-credentials in three topic areas: Best First Instruction, Tough to Teach and Professional Learning Communities.

PD Anywhere Professional Development
Best First Instruction:
High Impact Teaching and Support in Tier 1

When a teacher’s initial lesson on a topic results in student mastery of the content, everyone wins. The educator is happy because the planning and teaching were effective the first time.

PD Anywhere Professional Development
Reaching Tough to Teach Students:
Tiers 2 and 3 Instruction and Interventions

While all educators plan for academic success and maximize positive behavior supports at Tier 1, there will always be some students who require additional support.

Best First Instruction:
High Impact Teaching and Support in Tier 1

When a teacher’s initial lesson on a topic results in student mastery of the content, everyone wins. The educator is happy because the planning and teaching were effective the first time. Students are happy because they “got it,” which not only feels good, but ensures that they will not need re-teaching, more practice, or individual help. Administrators are pleased because Tier 1 mastery means that there is less need for personnel or time in the busy schedule to repeat the instruction. Parents are usually thrilled that their children are learning as part of a group and do not need specialized instruction.

While it is impossible to guarantee that all students will learn the required content the first time it is taught to a group, Best First Instruction is always the goal. All teachers want to do the best they can the first time around—preventing failure and ensuring student success!

    Easy and Effective Formative Assessment

Formative assessments are used to determine whether students are mastering the content, either before a lesson or unit is taught or during instruction. Teachers use the information gathered from formative assessments to change or fine-tune their instruction. If the instruction is not effective, then something needs to change. The Easy and Effective Formative Assessment Micro-Credential explains what formative assessments are, how they fit into instruction, and how to use the data gathered from them to improve instruction. The content for this micro-credential provides relevant, practical “use now” information from a wide range of sources.

    Backwards Design Planning

Planning with the end in mind is crucial for effective instruction and student learning. When teachers are clear about what mastery looks like, they can plan and implement units and lessons that are directly aligned to standards and assessments. This micro-credential provides educators with all of the information and tools needed to address the four big questions about learning while planning backwards from the standard, to the expectations for students, to the assessment, and to the learning activities. The format of this micro-credential takes away the mystery of backwards design and makes the process easy to follow and simple to implement.

Stacking the Deck for Student Success: Positive Teacher-Student Relationships

Positive teacher-student relationships provide the foundation for trust, mutual respect, and student engagement. When students and teachers develop strong relationships, the outcomes are positive: Students stay in school, do better academically, and demonstrate more appropriate behaviors. These relationships also lay the groundwork for positive and preventative behavior supports in Tier 1.

This Micro-Credential provides educators with content from a variety of sources, including teachers’ ideas on blog posts, student suggestions in videos, research summaries, and practical daily activities suggested by well known authors.

Positive Behavior Supports: Prevention in Tier 1

No teacher enjoys dealing with misbehavior in the classroom. Student behavioral issues take time away from instruction, disrupt learning for everyone, and usually leave both adults and students feeling de-moralized and tired. This micro-credential provides educators with a step-by-step process for implementing class-wide positive behavior supports. The content can be used sequentially to learn about foundational practices, creating a positive support system, and implementing strategies that have been proven effective. Practical tools that focus on preventing misbehavior can make all the difference in reducing student referral rates and behavior incidents, and, most importantly, increasing student achievement.

Reaching Tough to Teach Students:
Tiers 2 and 3 Instruction and Interventions

While all educators plan for academic success and maximize positive behavior supports at Tier 1, there will always be some students who require additional support. This is not a sign that Tier 1 supports are not well thought out or implemented faithfully. Rather, it is to be expected. Students, like adults, are individuals, and they require individual consideration and support that is specialized and personalized to meet their unique needs. This is especially true for students with disabilities, students with language differences, students who are advanced learners, and students whose experiences may have impacted their academic and social skills.

Regardless of the reasons, when students require additional academic or behavioral support to succeed in school, it is up to educators to provide that support before they fail to make progress. Preventing failure, both academic and behavioral, is the goal.

Differentiating and Boosting Engagement for Reluctant Learners Through Choice

Educators know that some students need support because they have learning differences or challenges that are innate. However, other students are disengaged from school and uninterested in learning. These unmotivated students are truly hard to reach and tough to teach. Strategies to differentiate and motivate these students are numerous and this micro-credential does not provide a cursory review of all of them. Instead, this micro-credential focuses on just one topic: Choice. Using choice as a way to engage and differentiate is strongly supported by research and can be used with all students, in all content areas, and as a foundation for even more differentiation. We know that educators will enjoy the content for the micro-credential and get more engaged and motivated themselves as they implement what they learn!

Positive Behavior Supports: Responding to Challenging Behaviors

Behavior supports should always start at Tier 1 and always focus first on prevention. Educators who have completed the micro-credential Positive Behavior Supports: Prevention in Tier 1, have already implemented class-wide preventative behavior strategies. However, there may still be some students who are disruptive, difficult, or defiant and whose behaviors are interfering with others’ learning. Teachers need a wide array of interventions available for dealing with these students. If there is a menu of interventions available before misbehavior occurs, selecting which ones to try when a problem arises will be easier. This micro-credential will provide educators with the tools they need to design, implement, track, and evaluate effective small group and individual behavior strategies. Practical and effective tools are our specialty!

Using Student Work to Improve Teaching and Learning

To say that schools and educators are focused on data is an understatement. Data collection and analysis are critical components of the planning, teaching, and assessment process. However, when teachers or teacher teams only review information gathered from tests, they often miss the boat in terms of improving instruction. This micro-credential will show educators how to use student work as a powerful adjunct to formal assessments. When examples of student work are reviewed along with individual and group assessment data, teachers gain important insights into student learning and their own teaching. Student work can tell teachers what students understood, what they didn’t understand, what the most common errors are, and how instruction needs to change. Analyzing student work improves teaching and learning. We will teach you how to do it effectively.

Increasing Engagement With Student Goal Setting and Self-Monitoring

There are many ways to increase student engagement. One of the most powerful is not what teachers do; it is what students do. We have a body of research in education that tells us that when students set goals for themselves and monitor their own progress toward meeting those goals, they learn more. This sounds obvious and simple. However, many teachers do not know how to teach and support students as they learn to set realistic yet challenging goals for themselves. They also may not have systems in place to guide student assessment and self-monitoring in a busy classroom. This micro-credential gives teachers relevant, user-friendly strategies for establishing student goal setting and self-monitoring to increase learning.

Best Practices for Professional Learning Communities:
Practical Implementation Strategies

Effective schools and districts implement practices that are proven to work. Among those practices is a collaborative approach to planning, designing instruction, reviewing data, and providing interventions. By collaborating and taking collective responsibility for all students in a grade level, content area, campus, and district, educators can ensure students’ academic and behavioral success. While many districts have received professional development on the basics of professional learning communities, once educators return to their campuses, they often have difficulty translating the ideas they see and hear into practices that work.

This group of micro-credentials is intended to help teams of educators start the collaborative process and then problem solve so that they can continue to work together to prevent student failure. These micro-credentials are appropriate for administrators, coaches, teachers, and other educational personnel who believe in a collaborative approach.

Getting Started: Structures and Processes for Effective Teams

Educators who want to engage in the challenging work of creating a professional learning community need to take some basic steps to get started. These steps might seem obvious or easy, but often, teams do not know how to start the process. This micro-credential provides information related to establishing teams and then getting started with productive team meetings. The content focuses on defining what a collaborative learning community is, what roles educators must play in that community, how to encourage educators to continue their own learning, and how to build the group’s commitment to shared responsibility and action steps that work. This micro-credential can be a great supplement to in-person consultation and training or used as a stand-alone introduction.

Collaborative Planning: Designing Effective Interventions for All Learners

Preventing student failure is not easy. Educators continue to face challenges when working to ensure success for all of their students. Teams who are committed to designing and implementing interventions for their students who struggle have to go beyond what is typical, easy, or expected. Evaluating student data, analyzing patterns of growth, looking at both group and individual learning, and then applying research-based practices is challenging. Teams that engage in these practices must establish high expectations and then start the hard work of intervening early in each student’s learning process. This micro-credential provides educators with information from a variety of sources that will guide this challenging but rewarding process.

Using Student Data to Prevent Failure

High stakes, large scale testing is now the norm. However, the data gathered from these assessments do not always have a positive impact on student achievement. This micro-credential focuses on helping educators make use of data to change instruction and prevent student failure. To do this, the data need to be gathered often and reviewed frequently and should come from a variety of sources. We recognize that districts have data management systems with data available to them in many formats. How to use all of that information to improve student achievement is sometimes still challenging for teams and requires a common-sense approach.

Keeping it Going: Problem Solving and Maintaining Team Productivity

Even the most collaborative, collegial, and effective learning communities hit bumps in the road on the way to success for all students. Because change is difficult for some people, finding alternative ways of doing things when problems arise can be a challenge. Problem solving, continuous improvement, and re-thinking how things are done all sound good in theory but can be difficult in practice. This micro-credential provides information for teams who have established processes but encounter issues that keep them from maximum effectiveness. Included are practical, results-oriented approaches and information designed to help teams keep their edge.
